How does PHI compare to HEPA?

12.01.2022 Air Purity

Both the HEPA air purification filter and the Photohydroionisation (PHI-CELL®) technology are two various systems that are available in the air purity market.

In this article, we have explored the difference between the systems, to enable you to choose the right system for you.

What is a HEPA filter?

A HEPA filter operates by sucking air into the device through a dense, physical filter that traps airborne contaminants.

By trapping particles inside a dense filter, the system pushes out cleaner air into the room. This process cyclically repeats whilst the ventilation system is turned on and thus reduces airborne particulates in the indoor space.

If new impurities enter the room, the device will gradually pull these particles into the filter, and prevent them from returning into the air.

The HEPA filter is proven to filter ultra-small particles from the air. The limitation of its effectiveness occurs as it is passive, in other words, it must wait for contaminants to pass through a filter, and it’s only at the point of filtration that the air is actually cleaner. Furthermore, HEPA filers do not treat surfaces. Providing the filter is regularly cleaned and maintained it will remain effective.

How does it compare to PHI technology?

The air purification product using Photohydroionization (PHI-CELL®) technology actively treats air to purify the whole indoor space and all of the surfaces. The ‘active air’ passes across surfaces and cleans them with hydrogen-peroxide molecules.

The revolutionary Photohydroionisation (PHI-CELL®) technology produces low hydrogen-peroxide levels that eliminate bacteria, viruses, odours and mould spores in the air and on surfaces without using any chemicals. This tried and tested system has already been installed in over 4 million buildings in over 30 countries worldwide.

The revolutionary Photohydroionization (PHI-CELL®) technology in all our air purification products mimics how nature cleans the air outdoors for use in indoor spaces.
